Moral Injury: Naming Unseen Wounds with Dr. Daniel Roberts
We’re honored to share that Dr. Daniel Roberts, President & CEO of the Moral Injury Support Network for Servicewomen (MISNS), was a featured guest on the MilSpouse Transition podcast. In this powerful episode, Dr. Roberts joins host Jen Amos to explore a subject that touches countless service members, veterans, and families: moral injury.
Moral injury is a term still unfamiliar to many, but it describes something deeply personal — the pain that comes when an individual’s core values are violated. Unlike PTSD, which is often rooted in fear-based trauma, moral injury emerges from moments where right and wrong are compromised, or where guilt, shame, or betrayal take root.
This pain can stem from what was witnessed, what was done, or what was left undone. For many military spouses, moral injury can also arise from years of feeling unseen, unsupported, or left to carry the burden alone.
“Naming moral injury gives people a way to understand what they’ve been carrying — sometimes for years — and that’s often the first step toward healing,” Dr. Roberts shares in the episode.
Moral injury doesn’t stay hidden in the past. It surfaces in times of transition, in family dynamics, and in the stories people tell themselves about who they are and what they deserve. That’s why conversations like this one are so important.
During the episode, Dr. Roberts sheds light on:
- The difference between PTSD and moral injury
- How these wounds affect service members, spouses, and families
- Why naming these experiences matters for healing
- How communities can offer meaningful support
