SWAN was established by women veterans advocating for fair VA claims processing. As they worked, they uncovered systemic issues, particularly around military sexual assault and the lack of VA recognition for related post-traumatic stress (PTS). SWAN successfully pushed for policy changes, ensuring that sexual assault-related PTS was acknowledged by the VA.
In 2012, SWAN expanded its advocacy to combat exclusion policies that barred women from ground combat roles, arguing that these restrictions harmed career progression and contributed to a hostile environment. Their efforts helped overturn the ban in 2013, leading to full integration by 2016.
Today, SWAN remains the leading national organization championing service women and women veterans, offering advocacy, resources, and a 24/7 emergency assistance hotline.
