Although he is retiring from his duties at Fort Liberty, SGM Daniel Roberts is gearing up for his next deployment. He will be gathering more resources and allotting much more time for the work of moral injury support.
Looking back at SGM Roberts record, for over ten years he has served as a religious affairs specialist and chaplain in the US Army. As part of his role as a chaplain he has researched moral injury and has founded the 501(c)3 organization Moral Injury Support Network for Servicewomen, or MISNS. As a chaplain he began providing counseling and support to morally injured women in 2015.
Moral injury is a relatively new concept, still developing in its scope and significance. It can often result when soldiers and others in front-line jobs commit acts that feel wrong, witness such acts committed by others, perpetrate these acts themselves, or experience self-inflicted trauma. Many people are not aware that misogyny has been rife in the military, and military sexual trauma has often been ignored, along with hazing and disrespect. Female soldiers have carried a heavy burden of guilt and shame which often led to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.
Dr. Roberts’ work is cutting-edge. His 2012 dissertation for his doctoral program from the University of Phoenix titled “A Comprehensive Plan for Providing Chaplaincy Support to Wounded Female Soldiers: a Delphi Study” developed an innovative model of moral injury support for female soldiers.
A key finding of his research was that the Army chaplaincy did not adequately meet the needs of female veterans and that many women were uncomfortable with male chaplains. Dr. Roberts then pioneered research, advocacy, and counseling specifically geared toward moral injury in female veterans. He is now transitioning from active duty so that he can fully engage with the MISNS work of serving female veterans who have experienced moral injury.
To celebrate this milestone in his life and that of MISNS, Dr. Roberts extends this invitation to you: “I want to share a weekend with you, telling war stories, reminiscing about the good ol’ days and more great days to come! Join me for some real fun, companionship, and celebration! And what better way to celebrate than by giving back to those who have also sacrificed so much for our nation – the Women Veterans.” A portion of the admission cost is tax-deductible and will benefit women veterans.
The full weekend includes attendance at a Fayetteville Woodpeckers baseball game, a pistol range shooting competition, and a great party on Saturday night with a live band, a wonderful buffet dinner, 2 free adult beverages, and wonderful conversations.
